Yesterday two teams from the Fall CityLab cohort attended a Public Safety Forum hosted by the DC Councilmember for Ward 5, Kenyan McDuffie. An announcement explained, "The purpose of the forum is to address recent violence and crime in Ward 5. Please join the Councilmember to hear what steps MPD is taking to protect Ward 5 businesses and residents, and what the community can do to assist."
The Metropolitan Police Department’s (MPD) 4th District Commander Kimberly Chisley-Missouri and 5th District Commander Dierdre Porter, as well as several officers who work within Ward 5, provided reports on recent criminal activity, recent successes in the arrest of those alleged to have committed local crimes, and strategies MPD is deploying to address certain crime patterns.

One recent challenge cited by the MPD is juveniles from Maryland who commit crimes in the District. Finding and holding individuals accountable beyond the state line requires collaboration between police departments, which adds overhead and delays to the process.
A good portion of the forum was dedicated to questions and comments from the audience. With approximately 100 attendees, there were many questions on topics ranging from the effectiveness of certain police tactics to the amount of policing resources provided to Ward 5 as opposed to other areas.
