In September I wrote about Food and Transportation as Social Determinants of Health. Experts at the World Health Organization describe equitable access to healthy food and public transportation options as two of the ten contributing social determinants of an individuals well-being.
Business leaders have also recognized food and transportation as a winning combination for business opportunity. Express, a magazine format newspaper often handed out as riders enter a Metro station, reports that Giant Food is negotiating with Metro to install grocery delivery pickup points at stations as early as next spring. Three stations -- Fort Totten, Glenmont and Van Dorn Street -- are slated to be included in a 6 month pilot of the arrangement. The program has potential to expand to include more stations and other grocery providers.
The strong success of several grocery delivery services, including Giant's Peapod, was cited as underlying the natural expansion to Metro. Moreover, it remains the chosen transportation option of many DC commuters hard-pressed for time. Whether in determining health or predicting business success, in appears convenience is king.
